killing between 150 and 200 of them. |

C. Quantrill's August 21, 1863, raid on Lawrence, Kansas, left an estimated
two hundred men and boys dead or dying from gun shot wounds and an indelible
mark on the survivors and their descendants. |
Below/Right: Independence, Missouri, was the target of Quantrill's
band in August They captured the town and a force of Union troops. Shortly
after, Quantrill and his men were sworn into the Confederate Army, and he was
given the rank of captain. |
